Hellraiser (1987), directed by Clive Barker, custom SDR trimpass from the Arrow 4k HDR remaster, encoded in 10 bit HEVC with AAC sound, including 5.1 remaster, original theatrical Dolby Stereo, three commentary tracks, isolated score and effects, and subtitles in eight languages.

IMDb : https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0093177/

Video encoded in two-pass 16.0 Mbps x265 10bit with the veryslow preset for archive quality image. Audio encoded separately with Apple AAC for the highest-quality AAC sound available. Text subtitles converted to SRT, image subtitles converted to VobSub and repositioned.

Note : Arrow's new UHD remaster of the first four Hellraiser films is great quality, but as usual, they didn't bother to give us a version approximating the original intent, so here's another custom SDR trim pass.

Clive Barker is definitely one of my favorite horror writers, but his filmmaking career has been a bit more... varied in quality. This classic is definitely the high point, though, an excellent example of a filmmaker being horny on main, at least by the standards of the 80s. It's not perfect, some of the optical effects look a bit dated, the attempt at doing a US setting while filming in the UK doesn't quite work out (and seems unnecessary), and the relatively low budget is occasionally noticeable, but the creature and character designs are amazing, the basic story clever and original, and the willingness to go into some kinky dark places is refreshing. A classic for good reason. The generally quite good cast includes Clare Higgins, Ashley Laurence, Sean Chapman, Oliver Smith, Andrew Robinson, Robert Hines, and Doug Bradley.

Frank is a sweaty pervert who pays a lot of money in an exotic market for a strange puzzle box, and proceeds to solve it, which leads to a bunch of BDSM demons bursting through the walls like the Kool-Aid man and Oh Yeah-ing old Frank to pieces. Frank's brother is the enormous dork Larry, who, with his second wife Julia, are moving into his parents' old house. They find disgusting traces of Frank staying there, and as Julia remembers her pre-wedding fling with her kinky brother in law to be, Larry accidentally spills a bunch of blood in the attic, it turns out Frank isn't completely gone, as he manifests in near-skeletal form, having escaped a sex torture hell dimension where he's been getting really kinky, and he convinces Julia to lure men to the house so he can cannibalize them to reconstitute his body. In the meantime, Larry's trying to maintain a relationship with Kirsty, his daughter from his first marriage, but Kirsty's mostly interested in having sex with disgusting boys, until she has an encounter with a skinless uncle Frank, steals the puzzle box, and gets committed to a hospital where she tries to figure out what's going on.

As mentioned, this new 4k remaster is excellent quality, with great contrast and color, nice detail, and fairly restrained grain that's never the less a bit variable, as it's been in all transfers of this film. The transfer was already quite filmic and the HDR was moderate, so it wasn't all that hard to get a nice SDR version out of it. The 5.1 track also sounds good, as does the original Dolby Stereo, and the commentary tracks are copious and information dense. A pretty definitive release.

HeVK torrents always have lots of keywords. Try searching for “hevk body horror” for more mangling and mutilation of human flesh, “hevk demon” for more otherworldly creatures with malice on their minds, or “hevk 80s” for more from the decade when everyone was just desperately trying to get laid.
